Although it took a while to be fully realized, Man Ray's solarized profile of his assistant and lover Lee Miller inspired this series. For me, the profile evokes a sense of both one's future and one's past. The profile, accentuated by the photographic, black Mackie line, becomes our front line as we transition through life. Hands are needed to grasp and feel, and thus complete the sensory picture. It might be of interest that these photographs were made on Type 55 Polaroid Film – no longer available as Edwin Land's cutting edge technology has made way for yet another medium. < Back to The Front Line Photographs
